Final Year Project
Project Title
Role of Dhaabas in the Formation of Public Spaces in the City
Description
My thesis aims to explore the culture created by road side semi-permanent tea cafés, popularly regarded as ‘dhaabas’ in Karachi, and the process through which they cater to the formation of public spaces. These spaces provide not only considerable interlude from dull and boring routines but also create safe spaces for people to interact with each other, thereby creating a community and a culture. My research analyzes how the common phenomenon of dhabas is ignored when talking about the city’s culture. I examine the different qualities needed in a public space, and how dhaabas in Karachi fulfil these qualities.
